Microneedling

Microneedling is an excellent treatment that rejuvenates the skin by encouraging healthy cell growth. This procedure can help improve your appearance with visible results using your cell’s own ability to heal—which is why microneedling has become increasingly popular over recent years.

Microneedling stimulates collagen and elastin production to reduce the appearance of fine lines, scars, wrinkles, stretch marks, and other skin imperfections.

About Microneedling Treatment

Microneedling or Collagen Induction Therapy involves the insertion of rows of very fine, short needles into skin micro-channels to a precise depth. The skin responds to these micro-injuries by beginning the wound healing process and rushing growth factors to the area. This increases collagen and elastin deposition and results in more youthful and supple skin. The scarred, diseased, dull, or dead cells are replaced with new, healthy ones over the next few days.

After each micro-needling session, you can expect redness and mild swelling, which should subside within a few hours. There may be some tenderness or discomfort for the first day after treatment, but most patients can resume normal activity immediately after their appointments.

Benefits of Microneedling

Microneedling will:

  • Induce collagen fiber production for more toned, firm skin.
  • Reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Remove any skin texture or tone abnormalities.
  • Reduce the appearance of acne, burn, or traumatic scars
  • Shrink pore size
  • Reverse sun spots and age spots

Microneedling enhances the delivery of skincare products like serums across the skin, which is great for getting the best results from your daily skin care regime.

FAQs

Microneedling is not a good idea if you have active acne or chronic skin diseases like eczema or psoriasis. Immunosuppressed individuals or those with blood clotting problems are also not advised microneedling. Scars that are less than six months old should not be treated with microneedling.

Since it does not harm or remove the epidermis’ outer layer, microneedling is also regarded as safe for delicate and sensitive skin. Dr. Cobbinah will evaluate your health conditions and align them with your skin rejuvenation goals.

It is essential to discuss with Dr. Cobbinah if you have any allergies or are taking any medications to ensure no adverse effects occur during or after the microneedling treatment.

Some other pre-treatment instructions include:

  • If you have a history of cold sores, Dr. Cobbinah may prescribe antiviral medication two days prior to treatment to prevent any breakouts.
  • Avoid Accutane at least six months before treatment.
  • Avoid the following skin treatments at least three days before your session: Retin-A, retinoids, topical antibiotics, exfoliants, hydroquinone, and benzyl peroxide.
  • Do not shave or tan the treatment area and avoid sun exposure for three days before the appointment.
  • Microneedling cannot be done if you are pregnant or nursing.

Microneedling does not generally hurt when performed by a trained professional using the right technique. Some patients may experience discomfort and often describe it as a stinging or like a mild sandpaper rubbing, especially on the ‘bonier’ areas of the face, like the forehead.

The medical professional will first prepare your skin with topical numbing cream to minimize the prickling sensations on your skin.

Microneedling is generally well tolerated and has minimal downtime post-treatment. Depending on your skin and how deep the treatment was, mild swelling for a day or two is normal. You will need to use sunscreen, avoid sun exposure, and stop using any harsh chemicals on the skin for at least a week.
