How Long Does Microneedling Last?

Dull or flawed skin can significantly impact your self-confidence. Whether you want to reduce the appearance of acne scars, smooth out wrinkles, or simply gain a youthful glow, microneedling may be the solution you’ve been looking for.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat a variety of skin concerns. Dr. Freda Cobbinah offers microneedling as one of several cosmetic treatments at Essential Med Aesthetics to help you achieve your skincare goals.

Microneedling San Antonio

Popular for its fast and noticeable results, microneedling takes advantage of your body’s natural healing process to rejuvenate your skin. Also known as collagen induction therapy, microneedling uses tiny, thin needles to create micro-punctures in the skin.

The body responds by producing more collagen and elastin to heal the damage. Both these proteins are essential to your skin’s strength and elasticity but gradually decrease with age. Triggering the healing process naturally restores them and encourages tissue growth. This process replaces dead, dull cells with healthy new ones, resulting in brighter, younger-looking skin.

What Results Will I See With Microneedling?

You can expect a variety of positive outcomes from microneedling. The procedure helps strengthen and rejuvenate the skin, improving its firmness and elasticity. It can also address several specific skincare concerns, such as scarring and wrinkles.

Microneedling is an effective treatment to diminish the appearance of acne scars, wrinkles, fine lines, sun and age spots, and skin discoloration. The healing process reduces blemishes and damage, and the healthy new skin cells improve surface issues like pigmentation.

The refreshed, collagen-rich tissue also leads to improved texture and tone, firmer and more supple skin, and smaller pores. Microneedling is most often used on the face for aesthetic purposes but can also sometimes reduce the appearance of stretch marks and trauma or burn scars elsewhere on the body.

Stimulating the body’s healing process to produce more collagen is a natural way to improve your skin’s overall health and appearance. Some people see the effects immediately after the treatment, but collagen development usually takes a few weeks, and your results will appear gradually.

What to Expect With Microneedling

Microneedling is a safe, minimally invasive procedure when performed by a professional. Dr. Freda Cobbinah is Double Board Certified in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine and specializes in medical weight loss and aesthetic treatments. She will help you determine the right path to your aesthetic goals.

During your microneedling appointment, Dr. Cobbinah or one of her qualified team members at Essential Med Aesthetics will prepare your skin with a topical numbing cream to minimize any discomfort. Once the cream has had time to take effect, Dr. Cobbinah will use a pen-like tool with miniature needles for the procedure.

The needles will only puncture a few millimeters into the skin, and you probably won’t even notice the tiny pinpricks after. The microneedling process takes 10-30 minutes, depending on how large the treatment area is.

Does Microneedling Hurt?

When performed by a professional, microneedling doesn’t generally hurt. However, you may experience mild discomfort. A topical numbing cream can be applied to make the treatment as comfortable as possible.

Preparing for Microneedling

During your consultation before a microneedling treatment, Dr. Cobbinah will discuss any allergies or medications with you.

You will need to discontinue Accutane at least six months before microneedling. If you are prone to cold sores, Dr. Cobbinah may prescribe an antiviral medication two days before the procedure.

You should avoid several skincare treatments for at least three days before the appointment, such as topical antibiotics, benzoyl peroxide, exfoliants, hydroquinone, Retin-A, and retinoids. You should also refrain from shaving or tanning the treatment area and limit sun exposure during this time.

Care After Microneedling

Microneedling requires minimal recovery time, and most people can return to normal activities immediately after. You will likely experience mild swelling and redness for a day or two after the treatment.

It’s best to wait 24 hours to apply makeup, and you will need to avoid sun exposure and any harsh chemicals for at least a week. To protect your rejuvenated skin, applying sunscreen, especially while your skin is still healing, is essential.

How Long Do Microneedling Results Last?

After a microneedling treatment, your body will begin boosting collagen and elastin to heal the damage. This process will take place gradually. You may see results within two weeks of treatment, with the full effects continuing to develop for months afterward.

Most people need multiple microneedling sessions spaced a few weeks apart to achieve the best results. After that, the results can last for months after each treatment. During your consultation at Essential Med Aesthetics, Dr. Cobbinah can help you determine how many sessions will be needed to reach your aesthetic goals and develop a plan to maintain your results.

Can I Do Microneedling From Home?

Instead of microneedling, some people try derma rollers that they can use from home. These are inexpensive and readily available but are not as effective as professional microneedling. Derma rollers use shorter, duller needles that will not puncture the skin deep enough to draw blood and activate the healing process.

Derma rollers may result in temporarily brighter skin due to increased blood circulation, but they will not have as beneficial or long-lasting effects as microneedling. You will likely need to use a derma roller more frequently to see results, and you will not notice the same quality of benefits as from a professional microneedling treatment.

Am I a Good Candidate for Microneedling?

Microneedling is a safe and effective skincare treatment for almost everyone. It is suitable for all skin types, including delicate or sensitive skin. If you want to address concerns such as acne scars, wrinkles, and dark spots while improving your skin’s tone and texture, microneedling may be an effective solution.

You may not be an ideal candidate for microneedling if you are pregnant or have recently had radiation therapy. Certain skin conditions may prevent you from having microneedling, such as eczema, psoriasis, or active acne. If you are using microneedling to improve the appearance of scars, they must be at least six months old.

I always feel listened to by Dr. Cobbinah. As a mom, this is important because we sometimes forget to take care of ourselves. She reminds me to take care of myself whenever I visit. I typically leave feeling less stressed than before.
