How Long Does Dermaplaning Last?
Facial rejuvenation treatments can range from very gentle to intensive. In the hands of an expert, facials reduce signs of aging or improve the appearance of the skin more extensively than any at-home treatments.
While there are many facial rejuvenation treatments, many are limited in who they can help. Some facial rejuvenation techniques like CO2 lasering only work on lighter skin tones, while others require extensive downtime. Dermaplaning improves the appearance of all skin types for healthier, softer skin with no downtime.
What is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a gentle, exfoliating facial treatment to promote the resurfacing of healthier skin. Performed on any area of the face, dermaplaning removes dead skin cells from the top layer of skin to allow the newer, living skin cells to surface. Often considered a deep exfoliation technique, dermaplaning removes peach fuzz, exfoliates the skin, and leaves your pores smaller and less visible.
How Does Dermaplaning Work?
Using a sterile blade, Dr. Cobbinah and her team scrape away the dead skin cells at a 45-degree downward angle to allow smooth and safe removal. There is no irritation or inflammation. While there may be mild discomfort during the procedure, dermaplaning is not painful, and discomfort does not last longer than a few minutes. Each appointment lasts approximately 45 minutes.
Why Does Dermaplaning Work?
When skin cells reach the top layer, they are often already dead, causing the skin to look old and dull. Even after the skin cells reach the surface, they are exposed to harmful environmental toxins, irritants, and sun damage, further diminishing the face’s appearance. Dermaplaning frees the living, healthy skin, untouched by the environment, resulting in smoother, softer skin.
How Long Does Dermaplaning Last?
New skin cells develop and rise to the surface over the course of three weeks. Dermaplaning should be done every three weeks to maintain results and prevent the rise of dead cells and pore-clogging debris. After multiple treatments, you will continue to see improvements in your skin, but regular treatments are still recommended to continue seeing results. Appointments only last 45 minutes, short enough for a lunch break.
Is Dermaplaning Safe?
In the hands of a professional, dermaplaning is very safe. The 45-degree angle allows for perfect control to avoid irritating or harming the healthy skin. While the healthy skin remains unharmed, the dead cells are scraped away without feeling anything. The procedure is extremely low risk, and often patients sit and relax through the entire appointment.
Dr. Cobbinah and her team at Essential Med Clinic & Aesthetics do NOT recommend the use of DIY dermaplaning. You will not receive the same results as a skincare expert, and you could injure yourself through a cut or razor burn. If you are using an unsterilized blade, it could lead to an infection. Professionals provide the safest and best results for dermaplaning.
What are the Benefits of Dermaplaning?
Within hours after your dermaplaning session, you will notice healthier, glowing skin. The treatment also peels away uneven skin texture and tone, leaving the skin soft to the touch. When we are young, our skin brings healthy cells to the surface faster, resulting in a youthful glow. Dermaplaning has the same effect, but there are more benefits than healthier, rejuvenated skin.
More Effective Products
In addition to glowing skin, skin care products become more effective after dermaplaning. When applied to the skin, the skincare products often reach the dead skin, but dermaplaning reveals the active skin cells to soak up the skincare products. Because of the effectiveness of skincare products after dermaplaning, many people opt to do a chemical peel after a dermaplaning treatment.
Better Makeup Application
Without the hindrance of peach fuzz, dry spots, flakes, or other blemishes, makeup goes on flawlessly. As a result, you may find yourself using less makeup. You may find yourself wondering how you’ll ever go back to your regular makeup routine.
Smoother Skin
Dermaplaning smooths out fine lines, improves acne scars, and removes signs of sun damage. By removing pore-clogging debris and dead skin cells coating the surface, dermaplaning rejuvenates the skin. Your skin becomes more even-toned with each treatment and feels smoother and softer.

Cost of Dermaplaning
The cost depends on the experience of your provider and the cost of living in the area. To know the estimated cost, it is best to contact Essential Med Clinic & Aesthetics before your appointment. Some dermaplaning costs up to $250 on one 30-minute session. If you choose to do a chemical peel to cleanse your skin, it may cost $100 and $300 more.
What are the Results of Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning smooths out rough textured facial skin by removing dead skin cells and pore-clogging debris. As an intense exfoliation treatment, dermaplaning may result in:
- Healthy, glowing skin
- Smooth skin texture
- Removal of peach fuzz
- More even skin tone
- Diminished fine lines and wrinkles
- Improvements in acne scarring
- More youthful appearance
- Smaller, less visible pores
- Improvement of acne breakouts
- Increase in cellular turnover
While dermaplaning may resolve many skin problems, Dr. Cobbinah does not recommend receiving this treatment if you have an active acne breakout. With regular appointments, however, you may not even have breakouts anymore. Dermaplaning also does not resolve severe lines or wrinkles; it only rejuvenates the skin to its best natural appearance.
Is There Any Downtime with Dermaplaning?
Following your appointment, you may experience mild redness for a few hours; however, you may return to your usual routine immediately. Essential Med Aesthetics does not recommend spending time in direct sunlight for the first 24 hours after a dermaplaning treatment and using dermatologist-approved sunscreen to protect your fresh skin afterward is recommended. Sun exposure can cause your new skin cells to look old and dull early.
Am I a Good Candidate for Dermaplaning?
Good candidates for dermaplaning are anyone who wants to see smoother, brighter, younger skin. While dermaplaning does not irritate the skin, Essential Med Aesthetics does not recommend dermaplaning over already irritated skin. If you have eczema, rosacea, or an active acne breakout, you may not be a good candidate for dermaplaning.
