How Often Should You Get Dermaplaning Treatments?

There are many procedures available to reduce acne scarring, diminish wrinkles, and achieve an overall brighter complexion; however, many of these treatments may be more extensive or require more downtime than you would like. Dermaplaning is a delicate and quick procedure that requires little to no downtime and serves as a great introduction to the world of skin rejuvenation.

What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a skin resurfacing treatment that gently exfoliates the surface of the skin to fade concerns such as uneven skin tone, acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, and wrinkles. Dead skin cells and debris can dull the complexion and hide away the fresh and glowing skin underneath. This is where dermaplaning comes in to restore a more radiant complexion.

Dermaplaning utilizes a sterile blade that gently scrapes away at the top layer of the skin, known as the dermis. By doing so, dermaplaning exfoliates away impurities from the skin and resurfaces healthy and youthful-looking skin.

When dermaplaning is done by an experienced professional, it can remove unwanted peach fuzz, reduce acne scarring, and smooth fine lines and wrinkles to help you achieve the fresh look you desire. At Essential Med Clinic and Aesthetics, our knowledgeable staff provides dermaplaning in a relaxing environment.

How Often Should You Get Dermaplaning Treatments?

For the best results, we recommend receiving dermaplaning treatments every three weeks. This is because your skin will begin renewing itself during this time, pushing dead skin cells to the surface to shed. By continuing to receive dermaplaning treatments, you can prevent new dead skin cells and debris from clogging your pores. Repeat dermaplaning appointments can further enhance and sustain your results, keeping your complexion looking even and luminous.

While dermaplaning is an excellent rejuvenation option, it is not the only skin resurfacing treatment we provide. If you are interested in a long-lasting treatment that treats the skin beneath the surface with little to no downtime, an IPL PhotoFacial may be right for you. If you have questions about the services we provide, you can reach out to our team to book an in-person consultation with Dr. Freda Cobbinah.

What are the Benefits of Dermaplaning?

There are many benefits you can receive from dermaplaning. With treatment, you can see improvements in your skin, such as a smoother surface and a rejuvenated appearance. Unlike some procedures, such as traditional laser resurfacing, dermaplaning is suitable for all skin tones and types, making it an effective treatment for a wide array of clients.

Some of the benefits of dermaplaning include:

  • Reduced acne scarring
  • A more even skin tone and texture
  • Less visible pores
  • Decreased frequency of acne breakouts
  • Smoothed fine lines and wrinkles
  • Removed peach fuzz
  • A smoother finish to your makeup and easier application
  • Enhanced the effectiveness of skincare products
  • A gentle and safe procedure
  • Effective for all skin tones and most skin types

Does Dermaplaning Make Peach Fuzz Grow Back Thicker?

We understand that this is often a common concern amongst our clients which is why we are happy to report that no, dermaplaning does not cause peach fuzz or hair on the face, also known as vellus hairs, to grow back thicker. Once the hair begins to grow back, there should be no changes in color or thickness. Though it may appear that the hair is growing back thicker than before, this is just a temporary illusion.

What to Expect During Dermaplaning

Prior to your procedure, we will cleanse your face to prepare you for treatment. Dr. Cobbinah and her expert team will then use a sterile blade at a 45-degree angle to scrape the surface of your face. The entire procedure is safe and gentle and does not cause any inflammation or irritation.

Many patients report feeling no pain during treatment, and any mild discomfort fades quickly. A dermaplaning session lasts around 45 minutes, making it an excellent procedure for clients with busy schedules who want to treat themselves to an effective skin rejuvenation treatment. Many of our clients like to pair their dermaplaning with a chemical peel to enhance their results.

Is There Any Downtime After Dermaplaning

One of the great things about dermaplaning is that, unlike more extensive skin rejuvenation treatments, there is little to no downtime needed after treatment. After a session of dermaplaning, clients are free to return to their tasks as usual. After dermaplaning, you may experience some redness, which is normal and typically fades within a few hours.

To ensure the best results, we recommend avoiding direct sunlight for the first 24 hours after treatment, as well as using broad-spectrum sunscreen. These steps will help protect your skin from sun damage and can even prolong the longevity of your results. You should refrain from swimming in chlorinated water, including swimming pools and hot tubs. We also recommend that you avoid rubbing your face and wait at least 24 to 48 hours before applying makeup.

What Results Can I Expect After Dermaplaning?

After dermaplaning, you can notice improvements such as more even and smooth skin, reduced acne scarring, smoothed fine lines and wrinkles, and an overall brighter and more youthful complexion. You can see some improvements immediately after your procedure, though typically, results are most prominent after a few days.

Dermaplaning done by an experienced practitioner is one of the best ways to ensure you achieve the results you desire. We advise against having this treatment done by an inexperienced practitioner or performing treatment on yourself at home. While DIY dermaplaning may seem harmless, it can increase the risk of infection, pain, and undesirable results. Our team is experienced with dermaplaning and dedicated to providing you with safe and effective treatment.

Am I a Candidate for Dermaplaning?

Most patients who wish to achieve a smoother and more even skin tone, fade acne scarring and rejuvenate their appearance make good candidates for dermaplaning. We do not recommend dermaplaning for clients who have an active acne breakout, eczema, rosacea, or overly sensitive skin. To learn more about your candidacy for dermaplaning, you can book a consultation with us today at Essential Med Clinic and Aesthetics.

I always feel listened to by Dr. Cobbinah. As a mom, this is important because we sometimes forget to take care of ourselves. She reminds me to take care of myself whenever I visit. I typically leave feeling less stressed than before.
