How Does Laser Skin Resurfacing Work?

Time, collagen loss, and environmental exposures can lead to skin that looks rough, dull, or uneven. Laser skin resurfacing with Laser Genesis restores your skin’s clear, healthy glow and smooth texture without recovery time or discomfort. This effective laser treatment triggers your skin’s natural repair mechanisms for powerful, long-lasting results.

What is Laser Skin Resurfacing With Laser Genesis?

Laser skin resurfacing uses a laser to stimulate your skin’s cellular rejuvenation. Many different lasers are used for this purpose, and they vary widely in intensity and recovery time. Laser Genesis by Cutera uses a non-invasive laser that does not injure or traumatize the skin. Instead, it uses gentle heating to trigger the skin’s natural collagen formation and new cell production.

How Does Laser Skin Resurfacing Work?

Laser skin resurfacing, also known as laser skin rejuvenation, works by triggering your skin’s natural healing and repair systems. It resurfaces the skin by stimulating the formation of new, healthy skin cells. As these new cells are pushed to the surface, they replace damaged, hyperpigmented, and dull cells that make your skin look uneven.

Laser skin resurfacing with Laser Genesis also works by stimulating fibroblasts, cells in the dermis that produce collagen. As these cells naturally decrease their production over time, skin loses firmness and elasticity. Laser Genesis uses gentle heat to trigger these cells to boost production, leading to improvements in skin laxity, texture, and smoothness.

Laser Genesis uses a gentle 1064nm laser that works on the deep layers of the skin, producing changes that emerge at the surface and improve your skin from within. This non-invasive treatment is safe for most people and can address a wide range of skin concerns.

What Can Laser Skin Resurfacing Treat?

Laser Genesis can treat many different skin issues, especially with a series of treatments. Dr. Fredah Cobbinah and her team may recommend this treatment if you want to address:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Acne
  • Acne scars
  • Enlarged pores
  • Rough skin texture
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Sun damage
  • Skin laxity
  • Redness
  • Rosacea
  • Broken blood vessels

While Laser Genesis is most often used on the face, it can also be used in areas such as the neck, chest, and back of the hands. These areas often experience sun damage and other environmental factors that can lead to dullness and pigmentation issues. Laser Genesis reverses sun damage and signs of aging almost anywhere you experience them.

How Do I Prepare for Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing requires very little preparation. Healthy, unbroken skin is usually ready for treatment. However, we may recommend that you take steps such as:

  • Avoid tanning, limit sun exposure, and wear sunscreen for two weeks before treatment
  • Limit the use of certain over-the-counter medications or supplements
  • Avoid using harsh or irritating products on your skin for a week before treatment
  • Remove hair, depending on the area being treated
  • Arrive for treatment with no products or makeup on your skin

You will be undergoing a series of laser skin resurfacing treatments to achieve your final results. Following these tips between sessions will protect your skin and help you achieve maximum benefits. Your aesthetician may give you other recommendations based on your unique needs. People with certain skin conditions may need to take additional preparation steps.

What Should I Expect During a Laser Genesis Treatment?

Your expert aesthetician will ensure your skin is clean before moving the handpiece over it. You will not require any numbing, and most people report that the treatment feels warm and even pleasant. A session usually lasts 30 to 45 minutes. Laser Genesis is non-ablative, so it does not penetrate the skin. Treatment is easy and pain-free, even without numbing cream, letting you return to your busy day more quickly.

Is There Any Downtime After Laser Skin Resurfacing?

The amount of downtime after laser skin resurfacing depends on the intensity of the treatment. Laser Genesis uses a gentle, non-ablative wavelength that requires no downtime. You can return to your usual activities immediately. Your skin may look flushed for a short time, but most people return to work or their daily routine looking entirely normal.

Wearing sunscreen and avoiding excessive sun exposure between treatment sessions will prevent sun damage from recurring and protect your developing collagen from breakdown by UV rays. Your aesthetician will be happy to recommend sun protection or other skincare products.

How Many Laser Genesis Treatments Will I Need?

You can expect a series of laser rejuvenation treatments to achieve your desired results. Most people will have three to six sessions spaced a month apart. The number of sessions depends on your skin concerns, response to treatment, and other factors. However, you should expect at least three sessions to treat minor skin concerns and more to treat deeper issues.

You may start to see results within a few weeks after your first Laser Genesis treatment. However, new skin cells take several weeks to appear at the surface, and new collagen formation will peak at about three months after your last treatment. You will see gradual but noticeable improvements after each session, with cumulative results that look smooth, even-toned, and glowing.

Laser Genesis results can last a year or more after the initial series of treatments. We recommend an occasional maintenance treatment to keep your skin looking fresh and firm. How often you need touch-ups to maintain your results depends on many factors. Wearing sunscreen and avoiding exposure helps results last significantly longer, and quality skincare products can also boost their longevity.

Am I a Good Candidate for Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Dr. Cobbinah and her team recommend Laser Genesis for many reasons, including how suitable it is for almost all skin types and tones. Unlike many lasers, it can be used safely on darker skin tones, making it available to more people. Good candidates for this treatment want to address a wide range of skin concerns without downtime or discomfort.

Laser Genesis is not recommended for those with an infection, active skin condition, or irritation in the treatment area, although only your aesthetician can determine this for sure. Laser treatments are not recommended if you are pregnant or have certain medical conditions.
